A big thank you to our sponsor Simply Clean for providing the 23/24 season club awards.
The F could stand for many things. For those in the know, think back to the big F word joke between Jaime and Huw at the NSW Club Champs. But fear not, add the letter “S” and this award is for the Fastest person in our club this season. Before naming the winner, a special mention to Dave Mildren for his amazing effort in the Cairns 70.3.
The winner of this award, with a season’s best time in a Sprint of 57.54 mins and where he did his 5km run in 16.5 mins, is JAIME CASCAJARES
The FF award is for the Fastest Female in the club. A special mention goes to Christie Horsley who is just a couple of minutes behind the winner, but given her recent very strong performance in the Worlds Duathlon sets up a battler next season. The winner of the FF award is super fast. She competed in 4 of the North Coast League events and came 1st in her very-competitive age group in all of them, and was first female across the line in one of them. Congratulations CARA BRISBANE
This award goes to someone who has just taken up the sport of triathlon. It was a tough decision this year because we have some excellent Rookies. Before naming the winner, a special mention to Annie who has literally dived into the sport. Many people have to learn to swim in the ocean – but Annie has had to learn to swim. And has made amazing progress. But the winner of this award competed in 3 North Coast in the season and came in the top 10 in her age group in 2 of them. Well done THALITA BORGES
There was only one contender for this award. She competed in 5 of the 6 North Coast events and came 1st in her age group in all of them. But to win this award you need to prove yourself on the NSW stage – and she certainly did this – coming 1st in her age group at the NSW Club Champs. DEB FULLER
There were so many contenders for this award. To mention a few – Nick got his first podium finish this season at the Tweed Enduro Sprint Event, Christie’s strong performance over the year ended with an amazing 4th in her age group at the Worlds Duathlon, and Fillipo is just getting faster and faster – at the Nov-22 Kingscliff sprint he came 25th in age group and in the same event this season he came 5th. But the winner this year had a frustrating season last year where she was just missing out on podium finishes. She increased her training effort. This season she competed in 5 North Coast events and came 2nd in her age group in one of them, and 1st in all the others. GRACIE RICHTER
Before naming the winner of this award, you cannot mention Long Course without acknowledging our Queen Long Courser, Claire and King, Will Bennett. I have no idea how (or indeed why) they continue to train for an event that takes 13 hours. But they do it and they're amazing for doing it.
But the winner of this award goes to Dave for his incredible performance at the Cairns 70.3 event this year. He finished 2nd in his age group (out of 91) in a time of 4 hours 21. He did the 1.9km swim at an average pace of 1.30 mins/100m. He did the 90km bike at an average speed of just over 39km/hr and then did the 21.1 km run at an astonishing pace of just over 4 mins/km. The 2023/2024 Long Course Gun is DAVE MILDREN
This goes to a person who could barely swim in a pool a couple of years ago AND was scared of the ocean. After a lot of determination and conquering her fears, she now is super comfortable in the ocean and her speed and technique have improved out of this world. Most Improved Swimmer for 2023/2024 goes to JOANA SPONSEL
We all inspire each other in different ways.
We see strength in others which gives us strength.
We see the skill of others which motivate us to train harder.
And then there’s people who just keep on going, no matter what happens.
There are 2 joint winners for this award and you will not be surprised to hear it is Nerida and Pete Clarke. This season they achieved 6 x 1st places and 4 x 2nd places between them – not a bad haul.
Nerida says she is going to retire when she’s the last person in a race. She is sooooo far off being last I think we’ll have her on the podium for many years yet.
You both are inspiring to EVERYONE in our club. Congratulations!
We are very lucky to have so many people willing to volunteer their time including athletes and their partners. A few mentions (and sorry if I’ve missed you off the list)
Thanks to Andy for organising the Saturday rides and for supporting people in the Sunday ocean swim.
Thanks to Benz for organizing the Splash & Dash events during the summer season and volunteering at the NSW Club Champs.
Thanks to Ash for alternating with Andy to organise the Saturday rides from Byron.
And thanks to Larissa, Jarrod, Claudia, Mark, Jaime, Becky, Claire and John for volunteering at the Byron Bay Triathlons each year.
But the winner of Most Dedicated Volunteer this year goes to a person who thought it quite normal to ride 550km to the NSW Club Champs in Forster just to volunteer for the club. JOHN RUETH
This is a new award. For the non-english speakers 😂, a whoopsie is a mistake haha! This is presented to someone each year who has done something a bit dumb during the season.
To be honest there was only one contender for this award this year, HUW JONES who incidentally nominated himself!
At the NSW Club Champs he decided that the cycle leg was not long enough and decided to do 1 more lap. Some say (including Becky) this is a sign of premature senility. He says its due to too much energy. Anyway, he believes he is the well-deserved recipient of the first Whoopsie Award
We are all brave in our own way. Some of you really do not like swimming in the ocean as all you can think about is the theme music to jaws. But you still do it. Many of you were brave enough to complete the Byron Tri in appalling conditions. And sometimes the line between bravery and stupidity is very close.
Nothing seems to phase the winner of this years award. She entered the gruelling NSW Club Champs having completed only 2 other races, and with no knowledge how long and tough the course was. The swim was 1km and she had only recently completed her first 1km swim in the ocean. We thought this a very, very brave/stupid thing to do. The 2023/2024 Bravest Breaker award goes to ANNIE PELLATT
We are fortunate to have many talented members who contribute fantastic photos to our club, including Geoff Bensley, who has captured countless memories since the club’s inception. However, there is one individual who dedicates considerable time and effort to capturing those perfect moments, often going above and beyond. His photos have been so outstanding that they’ve been used by many outside of our club.
This award is our way of saying a huge thank you to a member who, when not competing, always shows up to our events, camera in hand, to take amazing action shots of us all.
Thank you, CHARLIE AZZ!
